Annie’s Lee family (L-R): Charlie & Annie “Mom” Krause, Simon & Florence Lee, ?, Clarence & Sadie King, ?, Clyde & Lizzie Schrader

This continues the contents of a daily journal of my wife Susan’s grandmother Annie Lee “Mom” Krause (1885-1971) begun on January 1, 1950 and running through 1952. In the introductory remarks for the first dairy, we said that she had been raised in a Somerset County, PA, Amish household and, as a young woman, fell in love and married a Lutheran man named Charles (1884-1973) from the nearby community of Cove, MD. No longer considered Amish by her community, she moved north in the county with him, first to Berlin and then to Jennerstown. In that move, they managed a Presbyterian church camp for a few years before buying their own farm just across U.S. Route 30. What follows are “Mom” Krause’s exact words, expressing details and feelings from life on a small Pennsylvania farm just after World War II. Whenever possible, corrections and/or meanings are placed in brackets. You may click on a glossary of family names and places for better understanding of relationships and geography. Some names cannot be identified, unfortunately. For additional information on and context for this family, read my “Introduction: Krause” and “Commentary on the Annie Krause Diaries.”
