* According to Barbara Doughty, Margaret’s father was Thomas Kennedy (1545-1602) who married Elizabeth MacGill. Thomas Kennedy lived in Dunure Castle, which is now in ruins. His family built Culzean Castle, though it is unclear whether or not he ever lived there. It is still a palace and offers a lot to see. One of Thomas Kennedy’s ancestors married a Stewart. They lead directly back to Walter Stewart, who married Margaret, daughter of Robert Bruce, King of Scotland (1274-1329) and who descends from a long line of kings. Barbara says that because the title of “king” was most often hereditary, and because kings tended to marry daughters of kings from other countries, our ancestors may have included large numbers of kings and other noblemen. Also, because kings are part of history, their ancestors can often be traced. Barbara has been working on Ancestry.com for about a year, and has followed the Kennedy – Stewart line back to Charlemagne. From there, the line goes back to Roman Emperors, Babylon and even Egypt.

I found your Carnahan lineage online which has peaked my curiosity. Most likely your Carnahan line is my Carnahan line through the brother of your Jane Carnahan Jack which is Capt. James Alexander Carnahan Jr. born 1719 and died 1790 spouse Hannah Power. Jane and James’ father and mother would be Capt. James Alexander Carnahan Sr. and Margaret Mary Janny.

Wow. Capt. James Carnahan born in 1692 and died in 1795 lived to be 103! That’s amazing.

I’ve been having trouble proving out this Carnahan line. My grandmother was a Carnahan and this is probably her lineage but I can’t say for certain at this point. If accurate the downline from Capt James Alexander Carnahan Jr. would be through son Hugh, then Andrew also American Revolution soldier, then John Franklin, then Ewing, then George Washington and then my grandmother Carnahan. The upline I think would be your upline too starting with Capt. James Alexander Carnahan Sr father of your Jane.

  2. Hello,
I had no idea there were so many Carnahans out there. My daughter and I have been on and off searching the Carnahan name for the past 5 years. It seems we go way back with the name and have found so many interesting stories that people have shared. We will continue to search and so glad we have found you.
    Warm regards,
    Mary Norma Carnahan

Hi, my grandmother was Hazel Carnahan: daughter of Sydney, grandaughter of Lafayette, great-grandaughter of James Harvey. I am through the Captain James Alexander line. I am going to Ireland on June 13, 2022. Does anyone have information where James Alexander Carnaghan and Margaret Mary Janny we’re married in Dublin on August 4, 1714? Thank you,
    Brenda Foster Christian. Dunlap, Illinois

Brenda, I hope your trip was rewarding and that you will tell us what you learned. When you ask “where,” do you mean a church or a general part of Dublin? Thanks for your addition to this branch of our Carnahan family tree.
      Larry
